The Philippine Scientist (Philipp Sci or TPS) is a peer-reviewed annual scholarly journal in English of the University of San Carlos (USC) Press, Cebu City, Philippines. The Journal is devoted to promote all basic and applied aspects of the natural and physical sciences and mathematics as they pertain to the Philippines and the western Pacific region as a whole.
The Journal publishes Research Articles, invited Review Articles and Research Notes. Contributions are accepted anytime from everyone regardless of geographic origin and institutional affiliation. This publication has been included in the abstracting and indexing coverage but not limited to the following: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA, Part 1) of Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA), Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI), Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory, and the Ulrich’s Update.
All submitted manuscripts are subject to a double-blind review process. The inclusion of accepted articles in a journal issue strictly follows the date of acceptance except in rare cases for accepted manuscript that is adjudged commendable for rapid publication.

In a conventional sugarcane field in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, researchers tracked 1,557 insects from 28 species to examine how intensive monoculture impacts biodiversity. While portions of the field were heavily dominated by the harmful sugarcane pest Proutista moesta, the ecosystem maintained a moderate overall diversity balance (H' = 2.43) thanks to crucial beneficial species. The presence of Polistes stigma (a dual predator and pollinator) and Macrotermes sp. (a vital soil decomposer) highlights the natural ecosystem services still fighting to support the landscape, underscoring the urgent need for integrated pest management to balance crop productivity with ecological conservation.
